Acceptance of Autistic Identity and Its Relation to Suicidality in Autistic People
What's the study about?
My name is Joules Emerson. I am an autistic masters graduate student with Idaho State University. We are conducting a study on possible factors related to suicidality in autistic adolescents and young adults. The purpose of the research is to evaluate how acceptance, social support, and loneliness relate to an autistic individual’s risk of suicidality.
Who can participate?
- Live in the United States of America or US Territories
- Be proficient in English
- Be 16 years old or older
- Be self or clinician diagnosed with Autism OR identify as Autistic
- You can participate even if there is no history of suicidality.
What will participants be doing?
Participants will be asked to complete a 20 minute online survey. During this, they will be asked about history of suicidal thoughts and behaviors but nothing in detail. Participants can always skip questions they feel uncomfortable answering.
Why is this important?
This study is extremely important as 1 in 4 individuals who are autistic will attempt suicide at some point in their life. By examining and understanding different risk and protective factors of suicide, this allows us to find ways to decrease an individual’s likelihood of attempting.
