Behavioral Interventions for Autistic Adults and their Parent or Caregiver

What's the study about?

The purpose of this study is to help autistic adults, and their parent or caregiver learn effective strategies and solutions for challenging behaviors. Through a new intervention called RUBIA (RUBI for Autistic Adults/ Research Units in Behavioral Intervention for Autistic Adults), our goal is for autistic adults and their parent/caregiver to collaborate and develop strategies that will set up the autistic adult up for success both at home and in the community. These strategies are designed to prevent behavioral challenges, reduce frustration, and increase positive engagement in daily routines.

Who can participate?

  • Autistic Adults (18+)
  • Parents/Caregivers of an autistic adult
  • The parent/caregiver and the autistic adult must be living together
  • Exhibit challenging behaviors (meltdowns or shutdowns, difficulties transitioning across activities, hurting themselves or others, etc.)
  • You currently live in the United States

What will participants be doing?

If you decide to participate, you will attend approximately 11 weeks of interventions (training sessions) and/or complete surveys. You will also be asked to complete other study measures at five different timepoints throughout the study.

These training sessions can be scheduled based on your availability and are typically done through video meetings or depending on your location, can be done in-person.

Why is this important?

Autistic adults and their parent or caregiver working together effectively can improve the success of daily routines for the autistic adult, reduce behavioral challenges, and increase quality of life and self-efficacy. Our goal for this study is to ensure the intervention is both helpful and easy to learn and use.
