Navigating Neurodiversity: Work Experiences of Individuals with Autism
What's the study about?
I hope to discover which current workplace/employment practices influence the employment of people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). I want to specifically focus on people’s experiences in employment and what company practices were most challenging or helpful for those with ASD. My research question is, “Which workplace practices are most effective for autistic individuals, and which workplace practices or phenomena represent barriers to successful employment?” Based on research in the extant literature, I will pay particular attention to issues of transparent communication, task delegation, role clarity, and other relevant issues.
Who can participate?
Inclusion criteria: Over 18 years of age, 6 months of any job/work experience, formal ASD or other autism spectrum diagnoses (Asperger’s). High school graduate or GED equivalent.
Exclusion Criteria: No work experience, no autism spectrum diagnosis, did not graduate high school
What will participants be doing?
I will be conducting semi-structured interviews with questions focusing on workplace experiences. I hope to discover in what ways they find the workplace challenging, what elements they find rewarding, and how they believe practices can be improved. These interviews will vary between 45-60 minutes and will be done online via Zoom.
Why is this important?
This research would be beneficial to those on the autism spectrum by highlighting their employment issues. I hope to gain real insight into why people on the spectrum struggle in the workplace, how they can thrive in the workplace, and ultimately what employers might do to better support those with ASD.
