Parent Support Program for Parents with a Young Child Recently Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder

2021 - 2024

Disruptive behaviors impact meaningful engagement in academic tasks and with peers, as well as result in placement in more restrictive settings, higher use of restraint procedures, and suspension, all of This study will connect parents/caregivers who have a young child recently diagnosed with autism to a veteran parent mentor of a child with autism to receive support and guidance for navigating an autism diagnosis. Parent mentors will support parents in ways that they connect with their child, take care of themselves as parents, and work together as a parenting team.

What are the goals of the study?

To address the dual needs of parents for support in navigating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) services and maintaining positive family functioning, this study will test Autism Parent Navigators (APN), an innovative in-home (via remote videoconference during COVID), peer (parent to parent) support model for parents with a young child recently diagnosed with ASD.

What will happen during the visit or online?

Participants will complete online questionnaires and participate in family interaction sessions at pre, post, and 12-month follow-up. In between pre and post-tests, parents/caregivers will participate in the control condition, which is parent to parent support as usual or the intervention condition, Autism Parent Navigators Program. Each family will receive up to 6 phone calls or Zoom sessions with a parent mentor. The child with autism is only required to participate in the family interaction sessions. Families can earn up to $450 for participating.

How will this help families?

Parenting teams who have a child newly diagnosed with autism will have an opportunity to receive parent-peer support from another parent of a child with autism and we will be able to assess the efficacy of the Autism Parent Navigators intervention.

Eligibility Criteria

Parents who have a child diagnosed with autism within the last 12 months, child with autism between the ages of 18 months and 8 years old, share parenting responsibilities with another adult who lives in the same home, first child diagnosed with autism, and family must live in South Carolina.
