What's the study about?

We’re studying how virtual reality (VR) boxing exercise can help improve mental health in autistic young adults. Participants will take part in a fun, game-like boxing program using a VR headset, twice a week for four weeks. We’re looking at how this type of exercise might improve mood, sleep, and physical activity. You can choose to participate at our MSU lab or from your own home. The study is voluntary, and participants can earn up to $120 in gift cards for completing all sessions.

Who can participate?

  • Autistic adults between 18 and 30 years old
  • Able to understand and follow basic instructions in English
  • Able to participate in light physical activity
  • Live in Michigan or nearby and can participate at MSU or from home
  • Not currently pregnant and no major medical or psychiatric conditions that would prevent safe participation in exercise

What will participants be doing?

Participants will join a 4-week virtual reality boxing exercise program designed to be fun and engaging. They will wear a VR headset and follow guided boxing-style workouts twice a week. Each session lasts about 45–60 minutes.

Before and after the 4-week program, participants will complete a few short surveys about their mood, sleep, and physical activity, and will wear a heart rate monitor (chest strap and/or smartwatch) during exercise sessions to track health data. All equipment will be provided at no cost.

Participants can choose to join the exercise program either at our lab at Michigan State University or from their own home. Total time commitment is about 10 hours over 4 weeks. Participants can earn up to $120 in gift cards for full participation.

Why is this important?

Many autistic young adults experience challenges with mental health, like depression, anxiety, or sleep problems. While physical activity can help, traditional exercise programs aren’t always accessible or engaging.

This study explores whether a fun and flexible virtual reality (VR) boxing program can improve mental health and physical well-being for autistic individuals. If successful, it could lead to more inclusive and motivating ways for autistic people to stay active, reduce stress, and feel better—both physically and emotionally.

By participating, you’ll help us learn how technology can support mental health in the autism community.
