Brain Study Looking for Children 8-12-years old
What's the study about?
Kennedy Krieger is looking for children, ages 8-12-years old, to participate in a study about the brain-based mechanisms that contribute to differences in imitation and movement abilities.
Who can participate?
Children ages 8-12-years-old
Prior diagnosis of autism or autism spectrum disorder (Level 3-4)
No prior history consistent with psychiatric disorders (e.g., bipolar disorder, DMDD)
No prior history of neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy)
Cannot be diagnosed with a genetic disorder
Cannot have metal implants, dental work, or permanent piercings
What will participants be doing?
Participants complete a brief cognitive assessment, a diagnostic assessment to confirm the participant meets research criteria for autism spectrum disorder, a practice MRI session to learn about the MR environment, and a 1-hr MRI scan. During the 1-hr MRI scan, participants complete four games using game controllers.
Why is this important?
This study uses a novel approach to image deep brain structures, like the cerebellum, to better understand autism severity and differences, along with behavioral differences like difficulty with imitation and motor abilities.
