What's the study about?

The purpose of this study is to understand the daily experiences of caregivers in supporting their children during meltdowns.

Who can participate?

Our study is recruiting caregivers of 2- to 8-year-olds with autism who have regular access to a smartphone.

What will participants be doing?

Participating in this study involves completing about 30 minutes of online questionnaires about family characteristics and child emotion regulation skills, attending an orientation session via video call, using a phone app for 7 days to share your in-the-moment parenting experiences up to 5 times throughout the day for 2-4 minutes each, and completing a brief exit interview about your experience using the app.

Why is this important?

This study will assess the barriers and supports that could help caregivers of autistic children better implement parenting skills in their natural environments. Better supporting caregivers’ use of the strategies that they have learned with their children may reduce their stress and increase well-being and self-efficacy,
and if caregivers are using the intervention strategies they have learned with fidelity (i.e., “as intended”, frequently), this leads to better intervention outcomes for their autistic children as well.
