Investigating Autistic Adults’ Personal Interest in Genetic Testing for Autism
What's the study about?
A genetic counseling student at Case Western Reserve University is looking to interview autistic adults about their opinions on and experiences with genetic testing for autism.
The goals of this study are to:
• Learn about what you think about genetic testing for autism.
• Learn about how this impacts your personal interest in genetic testing for autism.
• Learn about your decision-making about genetic testing for autism.
• Learn about your experience if you have had genetic testing for autism.
Who can participate?
Participants must:
• Be 18 years or older
• Be diagnosed with autism (self-diagnosed or provider-diagnosed)
•. Be able to understand study topics and respond (verbally or written) in English
• Have access to email
• Have access to Zoom or a telephone
What will participants be doing?
A short online survey that will let us know if you meet the requirements to participate. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete.
After submitting the survey, the student researcher may email you to arrange an interview.
The interview would be 45-60 minutes long.
You may take a break during the interview if needed. The interview questions and topics will be provided in advance.
The interview will be done using Zoom. You would choose from one of the following options:
• Video call on Zoom
• Chat function on Zoom
• Calling into a Zoom meeting with your telephone
Why is this important?
Genetic testing for autism is recommended to be offered to all individuals with autism.
However, there is limited research that asks autistic people what they think about genetic testing for autism.
We hope that this study will help to educate healthcare professionals so they can provide better care to autistic people in the future.
