Aging and Autism

What's the study about?

We will explore the effects of aging on brain structure and function amongst adults with and without autism. We also aim to better understand how this relates to cognitive, adaptive, and behavioral skills, and how these change over time. The goal of this study is to develop a better understanding of autistic adults/adults with
autism.

Who can participate?

We are looking for adults:

  • 40 years and older
  • Have an autism diagnosis
  • With normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing

OR we are looking for neurotypical adults

  • 40 years and older
  • No history of severe mental health disorders or developmental disorders
  • No first-degree family members with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Not taking any psychotropic medications


What will participants be doing?

Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires, undergo cognitive assessments, and complete MRI and MEG brain scans. Participation involves two sessions, one initial session and another after 3-4 years. Each session will take approximately 2 days: One day at Holland Bloorview Hospital. Second day at Sick Kids Hospital. You may also provide a blood sample for genetic analysis (optional)

Why is this important?

Not enough is known about the aging process in those with autism. By participating you will help us understand how aging happens so that we can develop better supports for autistic adults.
