Intersectionality in Autism
What's the study about?
Everyone’s experience with autism is different, and we want to learn more about yours! We are asking you to submit videos of yourself telling us about your journey to diagnosis and how that journey has been shaped by all aspects of your identity. We want to learn more about how autism and other aspects of your identity, such as gender, race, and ethnicity interrelate and change overtime. Your videos will be used to analyze communicative strategies and patterns as well as give insight to the intersectionality of racial, ethnic, gender, cultural, and neurotype identities.
Who can participate?
– All adults 18 and older who have sufficient language, speech, hearing, and cognitive abilities to record these videos.
– Accessibility to audio and video recording device
What will participants be doing?
Sign and complete brief online survey and consent
Create five video recordings
1. A brief video introducing yourself
2. Read a selected passage in your normal voice.
3. Describe a picture we will provide
4. Describe how to make your favorite snack or food item.
5. Narrate your journey to diagnosis, including who you consider to be your
community/affinity groups.
Time commitment:30 minutes – 1 hour. All participation is virtual and can be completed at your convenience
Why is this important?
We aim to increase understanding of how an individual’s race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or other aspects of identity relate to their experiences with autism and investigate how these factors influence the ways in which society engages with autistic individuals across different sociocultural groups.
