Understanding the Strengths and Needs of Non-Autistic Siblings
What's the study about?
I am conducting a research study that examines the psychosocial well-being and lived experiences of non-autistic siblings of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study seeks to gather expert and stakeholder (e.g., non-autistic siblings, parents, and ASD professionals) consensus on evidence-based strategies that can support the social-emotional development of siblings within a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) framework, given their unique lived experiences.
Who can participate?
- Must be 18 and up.
- Must speak English.
- Must be a non-autistic sibling of an autistic individual or a parent of an autistic and non-autistic child or a clinician that supports autistic individuals.
What will participants be doing?
Completion of a series of online surveys (~5-10 minutes per round) over 2-3 months, focusing on experiences and potential support strategies for non-autistic siblings. 3 survey rounds, where participants may refine or clarify responses based on group feedback. Optional follow-up interview (~10-30 minutes per round) after survey completion to discuss lived experiences and potential support strategies in more depth.
Why is this important?
This research will help support non-autistic siblings’ quality of life and psychosocial well-being, sibling relationships, sibling understanding of ASD, and support, which in turn can support their family structure, bond, and strength. By participating, you will contribute to research that aims to improve support systems and social-emotional interventions for non-autistic siblings of autistic individuals.
