Aging well in autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

What's the study about?

The purpose of this research study is to investigate how the brain, cognitive, and sensorimotor function change both in autistic adults over time. Aging, or getting older, might change someone’s brain function, motor skills, health condition, or how they feel about their life. By understanding how these things change, in the future we might be able to help autistic adults stay heathier longer.

Who can participate?

Autistic adults between the ages of 30 and 75.

What will participants be doing?

Participants will first complete an online screener for 10 minutes and complete a zoom screening for about an hour. Experimental procedure is approximately 7-9 hours and can be split over two days. Tests include clinical testing, fine and gross motor tasks, cognitive and quality of life assessments, and MRI scans. Participants receive $275 incentives for completing the whole test. We reimburse two-way travel from $10 to $60 (<1 hour to >5 hours) for individuals driving to our lab. We arrange a two-way flight for individuals who travel long distances. We also offer a one-night hotel stay for most participants. Lunch is also provided. Participants also receive a copy of their brain MRI scans upon completion of the testing.

Why is this important?

The primary benefit of these studies is to increase our understanding of aging associated behavioral and brain changes in ASD, especially in the adult population. Our findings will inform future therapies, diagnostic processes, support and caring for middle and old aged autistic adults.
